December Daily-Day 6

Day 6 of my December Daily is dedicated to St. Nicholas.  We always celebrated when I was a young girl, as did my husband and his family.  St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children and the poor (among many others).  He was known for giving to those in need, especially families of children.  It is said that he would leave small gifts, fruit, nuts and candies in the shoes of children at night.  My husband actually would sit his shoes out and St. Nicholas would leave things in he and his sister's shoes.  As a girl, St. Nicholas would always leave things in our stockings, which is what I do with my boys.  One small gift (DVD or LEGO set) candy and fruit.  I always go and pick out the biggest and best apples and oranges for St. Nicholas Day.  My oldest son was always most impressed with the fruit, and not the candy or gift.  Even though he no longer believes, he still marvels at the yummy fruit when he peeks in his stocking!
More photos below.  That old Santa image is one of my favorites. I think it epitomizes Santa Clause and St. Nick.
 Thanks for stopping by,

Emily

This book is a treasure, Emily! I love how you are including family history, traditions and cultural icons. The juxtaposition of St. Nikolas and the Grinch is perfect!
